of 15-year-old hadiya pendleton in chicago. police have been questioning two men. pendleton was shot a week after performing during president obama's inauguration sell break. rig celebration. ted rowlands is in chicago and is following the developments for us. what can you tell us about these two men they're questioning now? >> well, they concentrated on the area where hadiya was murdered. what they did was talk to witnesses and through saturating that area, detectives were able to come up with two people of interest. they are being questioned, being held for questioning at this hour. whether they've been questioned we don't know at this point. we will get more information from a news conference scheduled for later this morning. not only will the superintendent of police be at that news conference but we understand mayor rahm emmanuel will be there and the state's attorney. we will get more information on these two persons of interest at this point, not suspects, and there have been no arrests. this case struck a nerve not only here in chicago but across the country. michelle obama w
this morning in the murder of chicago honor student hadiya pendleton. two suspected gang members, 189-year-old michael ward and 20-year-old kenneth williams will be in court this morning. there are their mug shot s righ there. police say ward confessed and said she was not the intended target. just days before pendleton had performed at the president's inauguration, michelle obama appeared at the funeral. tonight her parents will be guests at tonight's state of the europe onaddress. ted rowlands has more. what do we know and how did police find them? >> reporter: well, zoraida, how police found them unfortunately wasn't from a tip from the community. they said they were very disappointed in the fact that despite the fact that this case was on the airwaves every single day for almost two weeks and there was a $40,000 reward, dhad not get that tip from a witness. what happened was they just canvassed the neighborhood and picked up little tidbits and were able to narrow down these two and as you said, they got a partial confession from the 18-year-old. >> and we heard that they mistook one of
of so many people guest: let me mention just a few of them. hadiya pendleton, and understood in an inspiration to our friends, all walking angel her cousin called her. she was taken from us two weeks ago. her family is here today a student at northern illinois university, with a warm heart and bright future, murdered in her classroom by a man with a history of mental illness. her mother is here today. blaire holt killed while shielding his friends from a gang members spraying fire on a city bus. his friend is here today marcus norris, hit in the face by a bullet that came through the wall of his house. thank god he survived. we are glad to have him here today. a true american hero who dedicated his life to serving his country and his community, killed by gang members with a straw purchase gone. i attended his funeral service. the officer's family is here, and his sister will testify today. there are many more in this room today whose lives and families have been changed by gun violence. i would like to ask the friends and family of the victims of gun violence to please stand.

[applause] as you know this week in my state of the union i talked about hadiya on tuesday night. and the fact that, unfortunately, what happened to hadiya is not unique. it's not unique to chicago, it's not unique to this country. too many of our children are being taken away from us. two months ago, america mourned 26 innocent first-graders and their educators in newtown. and today i had the high honor of giving the highest civilian award i can give to the parents -- or the families of the educators who had been killed in newtown. and there was something profound and uniquely heartbreaking and tragic, obviously, about a group of 6- year-olds being killed. but last year there were 434 murders with a firearm on the streets of this city, and 65 of those victims were 18 and under. so that's the equivalent of a newtown every four months. and that's precisely why the over
